Frequently asked questions
Everything firms usually ask before starting a virtual CFO engagement — plans, terms, onboarding, and how the free toolkit fits in.
How is Mesfonic different from our accountant or bookkeeper?
Your accountant records the past; Mesfonic plans the future. Bookkeeping and tax tell you what already happened. A virtual CFO and FP&A advisor builds rolling forecasts, cash-flow projections, project-level margin analysis, and a monthly decision cadence so leadership knows what's coming — and what to do about it — before it happens.
What size firms does Mesfonic work with?
Mesfonic works with project-based firms of 10 to 250 people — large enough to have real project economics to manage, but not yet at the stage of hiring a full-time CFO and FP&A team. Firms in this range get the most from senior finance leadership at a fraction of a full-time hire.
Do you require long-term contracts?
No. The Visibility ($3,000/mo) and Advisory ($5,000/mo) plans are month-to-month engagements. Strategic CFO arrangements are scoped and priced per engagement. Most clients stay because the reporting cadence becomes part of how they run the firm — not because a contract says so.
What's the difference between the Visibility and Advisory plans?
Visibility ($3,000/mo) delivers the financial foundation: monthly reporting, KPI dashboards, and cash-flow forecasting. Advisory ($5,000/mo) adds active CFO partnership — profitability analysis, decision support, hiring and pricing guidance, and a regular advisory cadence with your leadership team. Strategic CFO is a custom engagement for firms that need deeper, more hands-on finance leadership. Compare plans in detail.
What does the monthly fee cover?
Everything listed in your plan: the rolling forecast, the 13-week cash forecast, the monthly reporting pack, the KPI dashboard, scheduled cadence meetings, and on-call decision support. One-time projects are scoped and billed separately.
What happens during onboarding?
Onboarding starts with a review of your chart of accounts, project data, backlog, and billing cycle, plus read-only access to your accounting system. Within the first month you get a baseline forecast, your first reporting pack, and a set reporting cadence. Most firms are fully up and running in four to six weeks.
Can you work with our existing accounting system and team?
Yes. Mesfonic sits on top of your existing bookkeeping and accounting software — QuickBooks, Xero, Sage, or industry-specific systems. The role is forward-looking finance leadership: forecasting, cash planning, and reporting — not replacing the people who handle your day-to-day books.
Do you work with firms anywhere in the US?
Yes. Mesfonic works with project-based firms across the United States. All engagements are delivered remotely with a regular video cadence, shared dashboards, and clear deliverables each month.
How do the free toolkit templates fit with the paid plans?
The Finance Toolkit templates are free for everyone — they're a do-it-yourself starting point. The monthly plans are done-with-you: Mesfonic builds, maintains, and interprets the forecasts and reports with you, tailored to your firm's projects and billing.
How is Mesfonic different from a generalist outsourced CFO firm?
Generalist firms treat your business like any other company with revenue and expenses. Mesfonic works exclusively with project-based firms, so the work is organized around project economics from the start: backlog and bench cost, milestone billing, work-in-progress reporting, and project-level margin.
Do you offer one-time projects instead of a monthly plan?
Yes. One-time projects — such as a forecast build, a reporting overhaul, or a profitability diagnostic — are scoped individually with a $5,000 minimum engagement. Hourly work is available at $150–$199/hr for defined advisory needs.
